Fayetteville,
NC -- Peace dropped a quick 5-0 game to the Monarchs
of 11th ranked Methodist University in game one of today's
league double header. But the Pacers forced the extra
inning in game two only to lose 4-3 in the eighth. Peace
moves to 20-12 (USA South 6-4) while Methodist improves
to 28-4 (10-0).
Methodist allowed the Pacers only
3 hits in the game one shutout. Courtney Long (Nakina,
NC/South Columbus) singled to center field in the 4th
before making a quick run in the sixth. Tiffany DeLeone
(Clinton, NC/Louisburg College) singled down the left
field line and Kristyn Trogdon (Asheboro, NC/Southwestern
Randolph) added a base with a center field punch. Long
pushed Deleone into scoring position at third with a
fielder's choice forcing Trogdon out at second. A tough
line drive to short stop from Jessica Hogan (Denton,
NC/Southwestern Randolph) ended the inning without a
run.
Methodist had an RBI double in the
third to get on the board followed by a fourth inning
surge to push the lead to 5. The Monarchs scored 4 runs
off 5 hits in the inning.
The Monarchs started early in game
two with a two-run inning in the first. Peace moved
the bats earlier this game with a pair of hits in the
first two innings. The Pacers put one on the board in
the third. A two-out double to left by Ashley Stansbury
(Rougemont, NC/Northern Durham) and a walk by Joanie
Blevins (Thurmond, NC/East Wilkes) set up Holly Braswell's
(Raleich, NC/Garner) RBI single to left center. Methodist
countered with a home run in the bottom of the frame
to push the lead back to 2.
USA South Softball Rookie of the Week
Morgan Weathington (Raleigh, NC/Cape Fear) doubled in
the fourth to keep the pace but could not score. Stansbury
singled in the fifth followed by an RBI double from
Braswell. Kenni Seagroves (Apex, NC/Apex) tied the Monarch
lead scoring Braswell's pinch runner before being tagged
out at second trying to squeeze the extra base.
The Pacers held the Monarchs scoreless
in their next two at bats to force the eighth inning.
Methodist caught the first 3 Pacer hits in the air leaving
the tie breaker pinch runner on second. The Monarchs
moved their pinch runner to third with a quick sacrifice
bunt followed by a fielder's choice RBI to end the game.
