Raleigh, NC--Congratulations
senior players Joanie Blevins (Thurmond, NC/East Wilkes),
Holly Braswell (Raleigh, NC/Garner) and Kenni Seagroves
(Apex, NC/Apex)!
The Pacers dominated the Avenging
Angels of Meredith College in today's double header
sweep (18-0, 10-2). Ashley Stansbury (Rougemont, NC/Northern
Durham) earned her third no-hitter of the season (12-7)
in game one, adding 7 strikeouts and only 1 walk from
the circle. Peace improves to 24-14 overall, 10-6 in
league play. Meredith drops to 9-19 overall, 3-7 in
USA South competition.
Peace started game one with 1 run
scored from an Angel error and solid base running from
the Pacers. Peace drew 6 walks in the second to place
runners in position. Tiffany Deleone (Clinton, NC/Louisburg
College) moved Seagroves around with a sacrifice bunt.
Morgan Weathington (Raleigh, NC/Cape Fear) advanced
to first on an error scoring Seagroves. With 2 outs
left, Meredith pitcher Arielle Stout moved to catcher
and McKenzie Caskey entered the field in relief. DeLeone
hit a 2-RBI single to right field to extend the lead
to 8.
The defense did their job in the top
of the third, and Peace made a quick return to the dugout.
Courtney Long (Nakina, NC/South Columbus) started off
with a triple deep into center field. Jessica Hogan
(Denton, NC/Southwestern Randolph) advanced on an error
and stole second. Stansbury marched to the plate and
homered to score Long and Hogan. Blevins doubled to
center field but did not score.
A 7-run, 5-hit fourth inning sealed
the win for Peace. DeLeone singled up the middle and
Weathington reached first on an error. Long walked to
load the bases for Hogan who hit a grand slam to increase
the balance to 15. Stansbury added another her home
run to deepen the wound. Seagroves singled to center
and scored off a single from DeLeone to right field.
Two quick strikeouts and a ground ball to shortstop
ended the game.
Pitcher Stephanie Monette (Conway,
SC/Newberry College) picked up another win (12-5) in
game two with 7 strikeouts and a 2.00 era. The Pacers
maintained momentum scoring 6 runs in 6 hits in the
bottom of the first. Nine Pacers earned singles in the
win, including Blevins who had 2.
Meredith added a flurry of hits from
the plate in the third, but the Pacers held their opponent
to only 1 run during the inning. Peace added 2 more
to their advantage in the fifth but left the winning
run on base. Peace held the Angels scoreless in the
sixth. Stansbury started off with a single to left on
the bottom of the frame. Lindsey Moore (Clayton, NC/Clayton)
sacrificed her at bat to move Monette to second. Monette
stepped in to run for Stansbury. Braswell drew a walk
and Blevins struckout at the plate. Weathington hit
a crisp single to left field scoring Monette for the
win.
