Cougars Hold On to Lead to Earn League Win
Raleigh, NC -- Peace (4-7, 1-5 USAS) entered the locker room at the half up by two but Averett (6-4, 3-2 USAS) out shot the Pacers 54.5% to 35.7% in the second half to seal the 64-59 victory.
The scrappy PC defense finally pushed them over the hump in the first half. Peace took the lead on a putback by Karissa Herring with 3:35 left before the break. First-year Megan Sherrill picked up a steal and an assist on the next play to push the lead to three. Mia Sloancapped the period with a layup on an assist from teammate Margaret Minton with just seconds remaining.
An unfortunate scoring drought wiped away the Pacers halftime lead. Sherrill put in two free throws in the early minutes, but Herring scored the first field goal a full seven minutes into the second period. The six-point Cougar lead expanded to ten with just over four minutes remaining in regulation. In spite of a strong effort in the final minutes, Peace could not get over the hump.
Herring earned her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. LeAnne Horne added 12 points, grabbing four steals. Sherrill notched a game-high six assists, adding two steals.
Averett's Ashley Washington topped all with 21 points, 10 rebounds. Liz Martin added nine points with five assists and seven defensive rebounds.
Peace hosts cross-town rival Meredith College in a Sunday afternoon match-up January 17. The Peace College Campus Activities Board will host a pregame tailgating celebration in Belk dining hall beginning at 11:30 am. Come and join the fun early to get ready for the USA South rivalry. See you on the sidelines!
