Kelly Johnson enters his fifth year as the Director of Athletics and Head Basketball Coach at Peace College. During the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons the Pacers tied for third place during the regular seasaon in the USA South Athletic Conference as well as advancing to the Conference Tournament semifinals both seasons. In 2006-2007 the team finished sixth during the regular season and was eliminated in the USA South Tournament Quarterfinals. Coach Johnson's young 2007-2008 squad included no seniors and eight underclassmen. The team secured several wins during the regular season and looks to return a full, experienced squad next year.

 

Johnson spent 20 years teaching and coaching at Arendell Parrott Academy in Kinston, North Carolina. He served as the Varsity Boys’ Head Basketball Coach for eight seasons as well as Director of Athletics for 18 years. Coach Johnson took his 2001 Basketball team to the NCISAA State Championship game; they were also State Semifinalist in 1997 and 2002. His 2000, 2001 and 2002 teams were both Regular Season and Tournament Champions in the East Plains Independent Conference.

Coach Johnson and wife Debbie founded and ran the East Carolina Storm AAU Girls’ Basketball program from 1993 to 2004. His 14 and under team won the North Carolina State Championship in 1995 advancing to the AAU Nationals that same year. The same team also advanced to the AAU Nationals in 1997 and 1998. In 2002 his 13 and under team won the AAU National Invitational Tournament Bronze Division in Orlando, Florida. Johnson coached 20 girls who went on to play college basketball including Teana McKiver, a Tulane University graduate who is now a member of the Charlotte Sting of the WNBA.

A 1977 graduate of East Carolina University, Johnson earned a Master of Arts in Education from East Carolina in 1989. He played two years of intercollegiate basketball at Lenoir Community College from 1973-1975. Johnson and his wife have three children: Patrick, a graduate of East Carolina University ('00), Tate, a UNC-Wilmington graduate ('03), and Brooke, a Peace College Alumna ('04).

Wendy Jones continues in her second year of service in the Peace College Athletics Department. Prior to joining the Pacer staff, Jones served four years as Athletic Director as well as Head Varsity Coach for Volleyball and Women's Basketball of nearby Raleigh Charter High School. During her tenure at Raleigh Charter she developed a cohesive athletic program that continues to succeed. She also secured the high school's membership in the NCHSAA Mid-State 1A athletic conference.

 

Jones earned her Bachelor of Arts from Agnes Scott College, a women's college in Decatur, Georgia in 1993. She earned a Master of Arts in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Sports Management in 2000 from East Carolina University. Jones is a member of both the College of Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA).

 
     
 
 
Sarah Smoak

Sarah Smoak joined the Pacer staff this fall as the new Athletic Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Basketball Coach. Smoak played point guard for four years while studying at Lynchburg College in Virginia, where she was named to the ODAC Academic All-Conference team and served as captain her senior year. As a Hornet, Smoak was selected to the ODAC Senior All-Star Team in 2006. Smoak also served as her team's representative of the college's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

 

Smoak earned a B. S. in Exercise Physiology from Lynchburg College. While at Lynchburg, Smoak interned for the Lynchburg College Women's Basketball program planning and overseeing pre-season strength and conditioning programs. She also interned with the Duke University Men's Basketball program in the summer of 2005. After graduating, Smoak spent six months working for Nike in Honolulu, HI as an associate of the running club staff and gained experience marketing for the Honolulu Marathon.

 

Smoak has coaching experience as a basketball camp instructor at various programs across the nation including: Duke University, University of Connecticut, University of Virginia, University of Missouri, University of Maryland, Clemson University, Davidson College, Albright College (PA), Shepherd University, and Lynchburg College.

CHARLIE DOBBINS

Head Coach Charlie Dobbins enters his tenth year as Head Women's Softball Coach here at Peace College. Coach Dobbins inherited a first-year program at Peace in the spring of 1999 (2-22). Since that time his teams continued to improve and established itself as a leader in both the USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA Atlantic Region during the last four years. The 2008 season culminated in the program's longest conference tournament run thus far with a 2-2 finish and 27 wins overall. The Pacers earned their first All-Tournament spot as well.

Coach Dobbins was the driving force behind the successful bid that awarded Peace College and the City of Raleigh the NCAA DIII National Softball Championships in 2005 and 2006.

 

His blueprint for success stretches 34 years in the sport of fastpitch softball. As a player and coach, he has led teams to sixteen National Championships. As a professional, he toured with the World famous King and His Court and King of Diamonds fast-pitch teams.

Coach Dobbins has served on many softball related committees. Most recently, he was the NCAA Atlantic Region representative on the NFCA/USA Today Division III Top 25 Committee. Coach Dobbins presently represents the NCAA Atlantic Region as a member of the NFCA Division III All-America and Coaching Staff of the Year Committee.


Coach Dobbins is a 1981 graduate of Roger Williams University (Division III) in Bristol Rhode Island where he played varsity baseball and football. Coach Dobbins represented the United States at the 2006 Spanish Cup in Barcelona, Spain as the Head Coach of a USA Athletes International Softball Team.

Beverly Lineberger enters her second season this fall as Head Volleyball Coach for the Pacers. The 2007-2008 season included a USA South Conference Rookie of the Week and the conference Volleyball Sportsmanship Award. The team returned from Gallaudet University in October with a second-place finish and All-Tournament Team member. With ten returners and a sharp recruiting class, the Pacers look to move up the tough conference rankings this fall.

 

Lineberger led Apex High School to seven Tri-Seven Conference Championships during her nine-year tenure with the Cougars. Her 2001 and 2005 teams competed in the 4A State Semi-Finals.

 

Lineberger served as Tournament Director of the NCHSAA State Volleyball Championship for eight years. She coordinated and instructed summer camps, including a volleyball camp for middle school girls and opens her first volleyball camps this fall here at Peace College. During the last decade, Lineberger officiated multiple sports for NCSU intramurals, Cary Parks and Recreation, and USA Volleyball.

 

Lineberger received a Bachelor of Science in both Biological Sciences and Science Education from North Carolina State University (NCSU). She was a recipient of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship and proceeded to teach Wildlife Management at NCSU and science while at Apex.

Kelly McEleney enters her second season this fall as the Head Women's Soccer Coach at Peace College. Her return this fall offers Peace stability and consistency important for the young Pacer squad. The Pacers added a conference win last season and look to build on that success with another year of experience.

 

McEleney enjoyed a successful collegiate career at NCAA Division II Barton College. At Barton, McEleney was a two-year starter who played center half and stopper and led the Lady Bulldogs to the 2001 Carolina Virginia’s Athletic Conference Championship. McEleney also served as the soccer representative for the Student Athlete Awareness Committee.

McEleney received her Bachelor of Science Degree in both Psychology and Criminal Justice and Criminology in 2005 from Barton College. McEleney is currently working toward her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at North Carolina Central University.

Prior to joining the Peace College athletics staff, McEleney served as the head coach for the twelve and under girls’ team with the Wilson Youth Soccer Association for two seasons. She also assisted with the Community Christian School team in Wilson and Magellan Charter School in Raleigh. McEleney worked numerous soccer camps with the Wilson Family YMCA and Barton College.

Cy King enters his seventh season as Head Tennis Coach for the Pacers. Coach King is a Raleigh native and graduate of Broughton High School. He played number one singles on the 1970 NCHSAA 4A State Championship Team and paired with Jim Dorsett to win the state doubles title. King earned a Bachelor of Arts in History at North Carolina State University and lettered four year's as a member of the university's tennis team. In January 2005 King was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame.

 

Coach King served as Tennis Director for the Raleigh Parks system for 30 years beginning in 1974 and earned numerous awards as a tennis professional. He also served as General Manager of the Raleigh Racquet Club.

 

The Southern Tennis Association recognized King as the state's Volunteer of the Year in 1993. He was presented the inaugural Mary Milam Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding contributions to Tennis in North Carolina in 1996. He was selected as the United States Professional Tennis Association's North Carolina Professional of the Year in 1996. King was selected News and Observer's Tar Heel of the Week in May 1997. During King's tenure with the City of Raleigh, the parks system was selected as Outstanding Parks and Recreation Program in North Carolina in 2001.

King volunteered for local, state, regional and national committees of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). He is Past-President of the North Carolina Tennis Association and the North Carolina Tennis Foundation. He served as a Delegate-at-Large on the USTA Southern Section's Board of Directors and served on national USTA committees. King currently works for the USTA as the Tennis Service Representative for North Carolina.

Rob King holds a Master of Arts in Physical Education from East Tennessee State University. Coach King is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Instructor.


In his eleventh year as a Physical Education and Health Instructor and ninth year as Head Cross Country Coach, he believes strongly that the playing fields are simply an extension of the classroom. A student of exercise science and novice runner for more than 18 years, Coach King delights in the opportunity to bridge the gap between science and sport.

Coach King’s current focus is to facilitate consistent improvement in individual and team performance for Peace College's Cross Country squad. Peace College will partner with a neighbor institution to host several local meets in the coming season.
